Perineural arachnoidal gliomatosis: case report.

Gliomas are the most common infiltrative neoplasms of the optic nerve and can present as two distinct growth patterns: intraneural glial proliferation and perineural arachnoidal gliomatosis (PAG). It has been suggested that perineural arachnoidal gliomatosis is seen almost exclusively in the setting of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). We describe a child with perineural arachnoidal gliomatosis o...

Visual loss in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 and optic pathway gliomas: relation to tumor location by magnetic resonance imaging.

PURPOSE To examine the potential for visual acuity loss, and its relation to extent and location of optic pathway gliomas in a cohort of children with neurofibromatosis type 1 studied with magnetic resonance imaging. METHODS We reviewed the neuro-ophthalmologic records and brain/orbital magnetic resonance imaging scans for 43 consecutive pediatric patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 and op...

Non-optic glioma in adults and children with neurofibromatosis 1

BACKGROUND Non-optic gliomas occur in 5% of children with NF1, but little is known about these tumours in adults. We aimed to investigate progression, spontaneous regression and the natural history of non-optic gliomas in adults and compare these findings to the results found in children. RESULTS One thousand seven hundred twenty-two brain MRI scans of 562 unselected individuals with NF1 were...

Neurofibromatosis type 1 and sporadic optic gliomas.

AIMS To compare the natural history of sporadic optic glioma with those associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). METHODS Optic glioma cases were identified using both the Manchester Children's Tumour Registry (CTR) and the North West Regional NF1 Database (NF1DB), with detailed information on natural history available from the former (in 34 of 36 cases identified). RESULTS A total of...
